The
Northern Lights could illuminate skies over northern England, Scotland
and Northern Ireland today. Two large explosions on the Sun have sent
massive amounts of magnetically charged particles heading for Earth. The
Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) can produce mesmerising patterns of green,
pink, red, blue and yellow light.

The
variations in colour are due to the type of gas particles colliding.“If
it was a weak display, we’d be advising people to try and move out to
the country, but this is going to be a strong display.”“Watch from your
back yard is the message.” "The Harvest Moon is fading away and there’ll
be a short period after sunset where the sky will be in darkness. But
then the moon will rise and it will brighten the sky,” Mr Moore added.
