On the Sept. 25 premiere of Grey’s Anatomy, things pick up exactly where they left off after Cristina Yang leaves for good. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is dealing with Derek (Patrick Dempsey) deciding to move to D.C. without her, Hunt (Kevin McKidd) is devastated over Cristina leaving, and Alex (Justin Chambers) and Miranda (Chandra Wilson) are going head-to-head over the open board seat. But, more importantly, when will Meredith figure out newcomer Maggie (Kelly McCreary) is her sister? ‘Grey’s Anatomy': Meredith Meets Her New Half-Sister. It’s immediately obvious that Meredith is in severe post-Cristina Yang depression. How can I tell? Well, she breaks into her old home where Alex is peacefully sleeping with his girlfriend, kicks her out of the bed, and crawls in to chat with Alex. Avid Grey’s fans, you know this is a Meredith and Cristina thing, and so does Alex. “This is not our thing,” he tells her, to no avail.
Sadly, Meredith is not the only one suffering from post-Cristina Yang depression. So is Hunt, and everyone knows it — especially after April (Sarah Drew) points it out. She decides that what he needs is a friend, and she volunteers Jackson (Jesse Williams). Later in the episode, Webber (James Pickens Jr.) tries to make bro-esque plans with Hunt but it’s a pretty awkward approach and Hunt deflects. For now. Do you think Meredith and Derek are breaking up? Even McDreamy gives it a shot, and he reveals to Hunt that April told him to ask him on a “date” so that he could spend some time with a friend. Hunt finds that as awkward and inappropriate as the rest of us, and tells Derek not to ask him on any more dates. Poor guy!
However, the moment we’ve all been waiting for happens in a typically dramatic fashion when Meredith meets her half-sister, Maggie Pierce, on the helipad as a storm nearly brings a helicopter down on top of them. Welcome to the family, Maggie! Of course, neither Maggie nor Meredith know they are sisters — or so we think. Maggie immediately starts asking questions about Meredith’s mom, Ellis Grey, and things get awkward real quick. Oh, and let’s not forget about the severely injured man they are working on who is freaking out and maybe even coding as they discuss family details. Priorities!
Bailey & Alex Prepare To Battle Over The Open Board Seat The open ends of season 10’s finale are slowly being picked back up, and the latest issue to be addressed is that Yang left her shares to Alex. This news breaks to board-hopeful Miranda Bailey after she announces to Jackson that she’s being recommended as the replacement. Oops? Later, the board meets to discuss what to do about the open seat — and decide who deserves it — but no one is able to make a decision. When Bailey and Alex come face-to-face after realizing they are going to have to duke it out, they take a much more mature approach to the situation than expected. Alex reveals he doesn’t want to mess this up, and Bailey tells him he would be an excellent board member. They even shake hands! But, once Bailey turns her back on him she reveals that she doesn’t think he has a shot — and she uses anti-bacterial lotion to wipe away his residue. Rude.
Derek Plans To Move To Washington D.C. Without Meredith. Unfortunately, the news we’ve all been dreading is revealed by McDreamy himself: Meredith and Derek have agreed to live separately. That means Derek is headed to Washington, D.C. to work for the president, and Meredith is staying in Seattle with the kids. Is it me, or does this have DISASTER written all over it? Throughout the episode, Derek keeps running into situations that remind him of the decision he’s made: leaving his wife and children behind. It’s affecting him more and more, and you can start to see the wheels turning in his head the longer it goes on.
Is he regretting the decision to leave his family, or is this all foreshadowing for the end of his relationship with Meredith? Whatever is going on, it’s very unsettling. Meredith & Her Sister Bump Heads, But Alex Becomes Her New ‘Person’ The situation between Meredith and Maggie escalates as the episode goes on. You can tell that Mere is peeved at Maggie for inquiring about her personal life, and it gets so bad that they finally come to blows in the middle of an operating room with a patient open and unstable on the table. Yikes.
When Meredith has a one-on-one with Maggie behind closed doors about her behavior, it quickly turns into a screaming match. For a moment it seems like Maggie is going to spill the beans, but she bites her tongue and instead reveals that all she wanted was for Meredith to like her. Meredith more or less tells her that’s never going to happen. Aw, the Grey family. They have such a way of loving each other, don’t they? After her blow out with Meredith, Maggie encounters Webber — presumably her father — and tells him that she knows Meredith is her sister, and that she hates him. She also shares that she doesn’t think she needs any “random” blood relatives she’s never met, which is an unexpected low blow to Webber. Poor guy. How’s he going to fix this mess that Ellis left him with? The good news is, Alex finally succumbs to Meredith. In fact, he tells her, “Yang left me her shares, and her board seat, and she left me you, too. It’s just us now.” To prove this to Meredith, the two share a table at the bar after work. Derek surprises the two of them, but it’s Meredith he rips the rug out from under when he tells her that he’s resigned from the Washington, D.C. job he hasn’t even started yet. Meredith is pissed about this, but why? Shouldn’t she be thrilled he’s picked her and the kids over a job all the way across the country? P.S. — The cameo award of the night goes to the flawless, incredible, legendary Geena Davis. Okay, maybe my bias is showing, but isn’t she just wonderful?
